What's Behind Senator Warner's Rejection Of Warrior Widows DIC-SBP Justice?
Harry Riley
August 18, 2005 So, Senator Warner, R-VA wants to "study" S185, "Military Retiree Survivor Benefit Equity Act of 2005," effectively removing this issue from any congressional action to repeal the VA Widows Death Tax which is a $1 for $1 offset of military Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuities by VA survivors' dependency and indemnity compensation (DIC) prior to 2007 .
Is it to kill the "Bill" or
play "political correct" games? Probably a little of both but
emphasis leans toward being "politically correct".
Here's my take on Senator Warner's action
along politically correct lines.
Most know the political climate in Florida can
go either Republican or Democrat...every little variable that enhances one
party or the other toward political victory is used...it makes no
difference what the impact of the tactic, JUST WIN.
The Republicans are searching for a viable
candidate to run against Senator Bill Nelson in 2006...they view Nelson
vulnerable so no stone will be left unturned to defeat him. They
don't want Katherine Harris (I can understand that), so Joe
Scarborough is in the headlights of the Republican Senatorial Committee at
this point to challenge Senator Nelson.
What if Senator Nelson's legislation,
"Military Retiree Survivor Benefit Equity Act of 2005," was
successful? How many military retirees, spouses, and widows live in
Florida? A bunch, a big bunch - probably more military
retirees, veterans, spouse, widows in Florida than other State. Would
the success of the legislation translate to votes? Probably,
certainly bragging rights for Senator Nelson...bragging rights are
important in a close race. Sorry widows, if Republicans can't get
bragging rights, you lose.
It wouldn't be possible that the Republican
apparatus, through Senator Warner, is attempting to delay or kill Senator
Nelson's legislation to take any positive advantage he might gain in Florida?
Of course, the Republicans are really focusing on kill Nelson
politically...they don't care about our widows, which points out the
disgusting nature of politics.
I'm surprised at Senator Warner agreeing to be
used in such a callous manner...place our warrior widows on the
chopping block of "political correctness", disregard what is
right, all done at the alter of the "party".
There is absolutely no shame in politics...sacrifice our warrior widows
for political gain.
Make no mistake, this kind of treachery is
practiced by both parties...if the Democrats have an opportunity for
political gain, they will do the same thing....as for Senator Warner's
action, it is shameful and brings discredit on himself.
Responses To: What's Behind Senator Warner's Rejectons of Warrior/Widows DIC/SBP Justice?
I am a gold star wife and received a copy of the
email you wrote to the "powers that be" (or at least some
of them) and wanted to thank you for standing up for us.
We always need all the support we can get and certainly appreciate
it.

Dear Col Riley:
Over the last five years you have been the
voice of thousands of W.W.II and Korean Retirees seeking justice for
themselves and their spouses. For that we owe you.
I, like you and many more retirees
have reached an age where whatever happens; happens. We have
lost faith in our government and especially Our Commander-in-Chief
to do the honorable thing; Keep American's Promise.
We have served in countries around
the world and have seen and know what it is to live in
conditions where governments impose their will upon its people.
Our government in my lifetime has a
history of always making promises to induce young men to service.
But, when its time to deliver fails to do so. Remember, W.W.I
veterans seeking their promised bonuses had to march on Washington
and how the government reacted to their demands.
Remember the governments refusal to
acknowledge the effects of radiation sickness on troops
whose participated in atomic testing in New Mexico.
Remember there is no such thing as Agent Orange. Remember,
Asbestos is not a problem for servicemen who served on
ships during W.W.II. /
And, now its final blow:
"The Military Retiree
Community has received so many benefits over the years that its
has become a drain on the military budget and causes our active
forces to do without needed equipment and supplies."
Your correct on your stance
concerning what is going on in Washington. And I would add Pork
Barrel legislation alone, which every senator and congressman
supports, is the prime reason for the lack of funds to meet the
governments needs. But, It is a means to stay in office and
get reelected. It is a way of telling the people back home I
got this for you (a bridge to nowhere). If the House and
Senate would really care about its responsibilities, and would
keep its to promised comitments not only taking care of its military
retirees, veterans, sick, elderly, etc., but keeping its word our
government would have more respect both at home and abroad.
Can you wonder why so many people have been
absent in the fight for what we feel is right? I have been
fighting for the cause for five years. What have I
accomplished? Nothing but, B.S. letters from Washington canned
responses from both Senators Dole and Burr. Congressman Price
on the other hand is on our side. This notwithstanding we can't
win the war without winning the battles. But, until there is a
change in the administration agenda I do not foresee the war being
won.
Sincerely.
